Overview

José Feitor (Coimbra, 1972) is a teacher, editor, publisher and freelance illustrator, working professionally since 2000, having had published in newspapers, fanzines, school books, record covers and many other printed surfaces. As editor, he was the force behind Zundap, an influential fanzine from the early 2000s, and in 2006 he founded the small indie press Imprensa Canalha, which has put out projects ever since.

He has been also involved in many movements of facilitation and publication of independent graphic projects, such as Feira Laica, a small press fair founded in 2004, Oficina do Cego, an artist-run non-profit association dedicated to the graphic arts, which he co-founded in 2009, and Raia, tráfico de Edições, yet another platform co-founded with Luís Henriques in 2017. He has also given dozens of workshops in illustration, comics, stencil, linocut and silkprinting in multiple education platforms, such as Arte Ilimitada, Nextart and Oficina do Cego.

In his graphic output, whether as illustrator or as silkprint artist, one finds the visual lines and forces of a tradition that incolves names such as Käthe Kollwitz, Georg Grosz, Otto Diz, Ben Shahn, Saul Steinberg, Topor and Blutch, and the same time that diverse techniques – pen and brush, indian Ink and wahses, ecoline and printing – are articulated in the construction of compositions that employ either larger gestures or more refined, controlled movements, and in which figuration, always with a human matrix, explores crossings with animal traits or with the deviating power allowed by masks.
