Variations of the Angel of History - Pencil and graphite drawings.
From 11 to 19 January 2022.
This short exhibition features a ten original drawings created by the multifaceted artist Ilan Manouach for the project Variações Sobre o Anjo da History/Essay by Walter Benjamin/Inspired by “Angelus Novus” (a Drawing by Paul Klee), a book published in 2013 in Portuguese and French by La Cinquième Couche e Montesinos. It is a collection of prose poems by Pedro Moura and with drawings by the Greek artist, based on German philosopher W. Benjamin's most famous essay, who in turn was originated by the painting he had bought from Paul Klee. Exploring relationships of presence/absence in the metaphorical and philosophical space of that same text, the new poems create a bizarre constellation of conceptual coexistence and tensions between paradoxes, accentuated by non-linear relationships with images, that seek less t than a thematic and formal relaunch of meaning.
