Ching-Yu Cheng
Ching-Yu Cheng (鄭晴育)
(Taiwanese – Yi-Lan County, Taiwan, 1989)
Overview:
Right after studying architecture in 2012, Ching-Yu Cheng would start a busy season of multidisciplinary artistic projects, residences and other programmes a little bit over the world. After a Masters in Art & Design for Public Spaces in Porto, she settled in this city and since 2014 she has participated in numerous colective events and exhibitions, as for instance the Corpo + Cidade festival, as well as solo shows, such as “Now You’re at Page Twenty-eight”, at Ó! Galeria in 2018.
The artist explores drawing and illustration, painting on ceramic and installation art, using mostly natural, precarious or circumstancial materials, as well as performance art, in which she integrates multisensorial actions, such as cuisine. Her practice involves often, if not always, notions such as habitability, community-building, autobiographical and family memory, and the role of the host an intrinsic part of every of her pieces, relationships are at the center of her expression.
The original drawing art and multiple art present at Tinta are very diverse in terms of processes and materials, from different series, but they all share a common trait: they present something as a small “habitable” space or nodules, in which playfulness has a central role, and from which small narrative emerge, whether they have visible characters or not.
