"Bad Island". By Stanley Donwood.
In English, 144 pages, black-and-white; carton cover and dust jacket. 20.04 x13.50. Hamish Hamilton.
Reviving the tradition of the original woodblock printing novels of the 1930s, graphic artist Donwood creates a narrative about the procession of history and the indelible presence of destruction and violence. In an austere style, of one image per page without text, the landscapes that open up in a kind of incessant travelling offer hypnotic and mutant patterns that demonstrate the inevitable end that causes us and is caused by us.
