What is the best way to summarize Paul Nash's work? It's so extensive. We think we know it from those iconic paintings of the desolation of the First World War, or the famous Surrealist Landscape of a Dream at the Tate, or from his more recognizably English landscapes, or from the Totes Meer painting of the Second World War. But there are also his wood engravings and his book illustrations and delicate works on paper and more commercial design work. English landscape painter or surrealist? Romantic or modern?
