If Watchmen and Batman: The Dark Knight Returns are the works that, in 1986, opened the space to the "revisionism" of superheroes, making us more realistic and "adult", this is the precursor work that Alan Moore would not even try the first steps in that writing experience. Published serially between 1982 and 1985 as "Marvelman", in black-and-white, this imposing volume brings together all the continuity written by Moore and drawn by Garry Leach, Alan Davis, Chuck Beckum/Austen, Rick Vetich and John Totleben. We follow the life of Michael Moran, who resolving his amnesia discovers that he has been a superhero with extraordinary powers. Gradually, in a typical "hero's journey", he defeats villains, gathers allies, uncovers deeper and deeper secrets and expands his understanding, to the point that his mundane personality no longer makes sense, and his new identity will have radical repercussions throughout the social structure of the globe.
Legal battles over the ownership of the character and editorial disagreements would lead to the writer asking for his name to be removed from subsequent editions, hence he would be treated as "Original Author".
