Catalogue of the retrospective exhibition of Arthur Dove (1880-1946), one of the greatest painters of the North American creative scene of the early twentieth century, referred to as the first American artist to produce abstract works after a career as an illustrator. It covers the period from 1908, the year in which the artist began to paint - after a trip to Europe and the establishment of later connections with the photographer and gallerist Alfred Stieglitz - until 1946, the year of his death. It is developed through the analysis of a vast group of paintings, collages, pastel and charcoal drawings that are reproduced with great quality.
Organized by the Addison Gallery of American Art and the Phillips Collection at the end of the nineties, it was curated by Debra Bricker Balken who published, last year, the book Arthur Dove, A Catalogue Raisonné of Paintings and Things, where the work begun here continues in a more exhaustive way. A fundamental instrument to approach the career and research of an artist who remains little known in Europe.
