Puppets, Pawns and Prophets. Marcel Dzama. Deborah Solomon.
In English. Hardcover, 184 pages, 280 x 235 x 2.3 cm. Hatje Cantz, 2013.
Marcel Dzama (b. 1974, Winnipeg) is known for his prolific drawings, characterized by a distinctive color palette and themes. Recently, he has expanded his practice to include films and three-dimensional works, thus developing an instantly recognizable language that draws inspiration from a diverse range of artistic references and influences, including Dadaism and Marcel Duchamp. Created in close collaboration with the artist, this publication features his 2013 exhibition at David Zwirner, London, which included chess-inspired videos and puppets and masks based on the characters, along with drawings, collages, dioramas, paintings and sculptural works.
Dzama used the architecture of the gallery itself--an 18th-century Georgian mansion--by hanging puppets from a skylight above the five-story building's central spiral staircase and placing monitors in the windows so that his videos could be viewed from the street.
