Shadows of the Sea, Cathy Malkasian
Hardcover, 168 pages, 21.08 x 2.03 x 26.16 cm, Fantagraphics, November 2026
Told through a powerful allegory, "Shadows of the Sea" is a story about grief and the winding path to healing, with the help of friends, loved ones, and a little magic. On this lonely road, two outcasts meet: Doris, a small but temperamental woman, and Stanwick, a shy and sensitive dog. Each of this unlikely duo holds a grief within themselves and has to decide whether to keep the pain or run away from it. On their journey, the two cross lush forests, to the eerily abandoned city of echoes, to the "muddy" sea, where they finally face the unbearable trauma of their pasts. Author Cathy Malkasian's graphic novels are known for being created with complex and moving allegories and metaphors, and Shadows of the Sea is no exception. Nominated for the 2026 Eisner Awards, in the category "Best Graphic Album - New".
